Well, frumps, surprises abound! I awoke to the news that President Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize and I say “Good on you, Mr. President,” both for winning one of the world’s most prestigious prizes and for accepting it as a call to action and a pledge for the future.
The sound of banging you might have heard, this morning, was not, however, a twenty-one gun salute. It was the sound of Republican heads exploding from “sea to shining sea.” I think there’s more than a little cosmic justice to this announcement coming hot on the heels of the “Impeach Obama” campaign website’s debut yesterday.
Predictably, the GOP has rushed, en masse, to thumb its nose at the rest of the world and there has been no consoling the “bratty thirteen year old” contingent who have been tweeting hate and vitriol since sunrise. My attitude is let ‘em rip – maybe we’ll luck out and they’ll go up in a puff of smoke.
I do have to say that I am getting pretty darn proud of the DNC which has found its voice and delivered this beaut of an official statement which says it all, in my opinion:
“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. “Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim.”
