Well, frumps, it is with great satisfaction that I can report to you, today, that some things still work as they are supposed to in our society. I am very much encouraged by the news, broken yesterday by the excellent Talking Points Memo, that CNN picked up TPM’s story of August 27th regarding the connection between Pastor Steve Anderson and Chris Broughton.
Chris Broughton, you’ll remember, is the man that carried two weapons to the Presidential event in Phoenix, AZ, earlier this month, after listening to Anderson’s “Why I Hate Barack Obama” sermon the day before. As a result, the US Secret Service has interviewed Pastor Steve who is now squarely on their radar. The only thing I regret about that is that Pastor Steve is sure to turn this into the Big Brother story of the Century.
Here’s a video clip of CNN’s Rick Sanchez discussing the action taken by the Secret Service:
As I posted, yesterday, part of Pastor Steve’s sermon was explicit details about the various ways that he would like to see Obama die. Some of the more notorious right-wing extremist broadcasters – Ernie Hancock of Freedom’s Phoenix and Alex Jones of InfoWars – then took to the airwaves to interview their new gun-toting hero, Chris B (which was as far as he would go to identify himself). (Listen here)
Several others picked up on these unholy alliances around about the same time which shifted attention back to Pastor Steve and the possibility that he or one of his flock might take the elimination of the president as a command from on high.
In his conversation with the Secret Service representative, Rick Sanchez pointed out that it would appear that, by the letter of a law that makes it illegal to threaten the President, Pastor Steve could have already broken the law. The response from the Secret Service, although not accusatory, was that Pastor Steve was “on very thin ice.”
In the meantime, Alan Colmes of Liberaland went head to head in an interview with Pastor Steve on the fine points of his “Hate Obama” sermon and pretty much reduced Anderson to a puddle of spew. Very gratifying . . .
I have no idea whether Pastor Steve would act out any of his gory assassination fantasies or whether he merely hopes to inspire others from his pulpit. What I do know is that, according to the Secret Service, Presidential death threats have increased 400% since President Obama took office. That is the greatest threat to a sitting President in our history. Here is a random comment pulled off a website where all of this was being debated:
It’s already ‘fascism’ and headed toward full blown communism. The sheeple and most ‘patriots’/conservatives/truthers/paulbots/whatever will be willing slaves because they are unwilling to do what is required.
It will take many expensive suits hanging along Pennsylvania Ave. to fix this mess if it can be fixed.
Don’t understand? Start here:

Think globally, fight locally. Aim small, miss small. One shot, one dead “Liberal” (communist/fascist).
Now maybe, I’m over-reacting but what do you suppose this person means, exactly, by:
“It will take many expensive suits hanging along Pennsylvania Ave. . .”
I’ve noticed lately, that the right wing seems to have rediscovered an affinity for lynchings. As I pointed out in an earlier post, some of these groups are actually selling nooses - hand-tied hemp – with a volume discount on their sites. At any rate, in my opinion, it takes amazing faith and courage for the Obamas to get out of bed in the morning, let alone go out on the street. For that, alone, they have my undying admiration.
When I realized, last night, how relieved I was to hear the news that the Secret Service will be keeping an eye on Pastor Steve and his bizarro flock, I decided to trundle over to the Secret Service website and see a little about how they conduct their business. And quite an impressive lot they are . . . I recommend a trip over there, especially the section entitled NTAC which stands for National Threat Assessment Center. There you can find (and download) some interesting (brief) documents describing how forensic studies have helped the Secret Service profile threats to protected targets.
Have a great weekend, frumps, and rest easy – the Secret Service is on the case!

I just keep my fingers crossed and pray every day that there will be enough Secret Service agents to protect Obama. I lived through the JFK assassination and it is not something I want to see happen again. Even as much as I despised Bush/Cheney, I wouldn't have wished that on our nation.

I'm right there on that same page with you, Texas. I remember well what real, overt racism was like and I've never been fool enough to believe that it had been eradicated. I knew there was some residual slop still under the surface but, I have to admit I'm surprised at how much is still there. Two steps forward, one step back, I guess.
It is nice to see that someone who does not agree is able to see how wrong assination is. VOTE! That is what this country is about. The death of the abortion Dr. should never have happened.
I was having doubts about my christian up bringing when I heard steve anderson speak I realized I no longer believed in god. I would rather worship Muslim GOD ALLA than the christian god jesus. During the elections when some republican idiot said there are jobs but no positions I realized how uneducated the American public had become. Lets get some of this money spent towards education . Enough tax deductions for churches that purcase all this tax free land, buildings etc. If we taxed these churches we could easily pay for health care for ALL the people of this country. Jesus would have wanted us to take carw of his children. He would not want us to spend thousands building churches. HE WOULD HAVE WANTED US TO FEED THE POOR AND HUNGRY..
